Can anyone explain why credit cards are used for ID rather than Debit cards?

Recently trying to make a purchase on the net I was asked for credit card details tho I said I would pay by personal cheque. I only have a debit card as I am not keen on credit cards.

    I’m not sure why that is for you. My check card works as ID perfectly well online. Hmm. Usually websites accept both.

    Sounds like a scam website. That should of not come up if using personal cheque.
