If it is a first time government loan, not usually. Actually the student, providing he/she is over 18 can get a better deal than the parents.

One can get student loans as long as one acknowledges that these are in fact loans and one must pay them back. A credit history is not necessarily needed considering most student loan are for students who generally have no credit history.
However, paying back your student loan will help establish your credit.

If you are applying for the Federal Stafford Loans (apply at:), then no, you do not need credit. However, these loans do not necessarily cover the full cost of tuition, fees, room and board. You would then need to turn to alternative/private loans. In most cases, you would need some sort of positive credit history or a co-signer with a positive credit history. Keep in mind, your co-signer does not have to be a parent.

FAFSA is not credit based and you can get government subsidized loans with them. To get a private student loan, you need some established credit, a 2 year work history, or a co-signer who has both. Check out for more info on private student loans.
Before you do anything, go to and file the free application. You can fill it out now for the 2007-2008 school year. Good Luck.
